Newbie usage questions...

Post by Varjak »

I read through the FAQ and the Wikipedia page on general Torrent usage; but I still have a few questions.

I really appreciate that the Deluge FAQ shows how to read the control panel (i.e. active seeders and peers and total of each in parentheses); but I'm still not sure about one thing. If a torrent on a certain buccaneering tracker shows 0 Seeders and 2 Leechers in its menu (not the Deluge CP), does that mean that I can NEVER get the complete file? When I first added it to Deluge, it worked fine and was downloading at a reasonable rate; but it slowed to a trickle and then stopped. I thought originally the file had at least one seeder; but he may have deleted the torrent.

Second, I noted that someone else asked about something that occurred to me. I found the same torrent (I think it was even from the same uploader) on another tracker. I tried to add it to Deluge; but although it downloaded fine and the 'add' dialogue box popped up and seemed to act correctly, nothing happened after I added the torrent from the other tracker. Is Deluge confused by having two similarly named torrents? The second tracker lists 3 Seeders and 3 Leechers.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Web page tracker reports are often not in real time. Also, not everyone can seed 24/7, so seeds/peers will come and go. The only real way to know is to load and wait...

No, but it already thinks it has that one. Use the Edit Trackers feature to add the other tracker's url to your current one.

Highlight the file in the main window.
Click the "Options" tab.
Click the "Edit Trackers" button.
Click the "Add" button.
Type in the Tracker Address, and click "OK."
Raise or lower the trackers with the "Up" and "Down" buttons.

Voila, multi-tracker info in your Deluge.

Just read this and I saw a response to my original question. I can't simply add the tracker to the torrent that is seeding, as they are private trackers. The stats need to be independently updated to either tracker, otherwise I upload on one tracker, and the stats get reported to both

Okay Trektorrent, just some clarification:

When I did the steps you described, when I chose the 'edit trackers' button, I saw a list of several addresses. Some were 'http' addresses, and some started with UDP (there was one of each for each tracker site). Can I select one of those instead of typing in the address? And if I type in the address, is it the http URL for the torrent's page or some other, more specific address (like the ones beginning with 'udp.' As of now, my list of trackers shows 6 (an http address and udp address for 3 different trackers it seems.)

And finally, when you talk about using the 'up' and 'down' buttons, what does that actually mean? (to raise and lower a tracker)? When I tried that on one of the addresses in the list, it raised the 'tier' number; but didn't seem to do anything as far as prioritizing that tracker.

Sorry for all the questions. Deluge seems very powerful; but all the setting can be confusing by someone who's not that knowledgeable about torrents in general.

One other thing: I've noticed on a few occasions when my troublesome torrent has been downloading, it sometimes downloads at ridiculously low speeds (~1 KiB/s and even less at times) unlike any other of the few torrents I've tried. At the same time, I'm uploading that specific torrent (as well as others) at vastly higher speeds (200+ KiB/s). Having watched a few other torrents with only 1 seed or peer, the speeds have been much faster.
