Newbie problem with Windows installation...

Post by Varjak »

I installed the newest version (1.2.1 for Windows). I'm using Windows XP Pro on a Toshiba laptop. The installation seemed to go fine, with no error warnings, etc. However, when I double-click on the Deluge icon, I get this error message:

"Failed to run the program, error 14001. This application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

Does this mean I don't need to UNINSTALL the initial installation? Should I try to install 1.2.1 over what I have now or try the previous 1.2.0 Windows EXE file? Are there any steps other than the two-stage installation I may need to do (the Deluge install wizard and the GTK+ installation wizard)?

I'm basically at a loss at this point. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: I saw a similar thread in the Windows section; but I used the most current installer (and not an RC version). I went back and now see (a day later) there's a new 1.2.1 installer. How does this differ from the previous version? It wasn't there yesterday, when I did my install. Can I just use that one OVER my current install? Thanks.

The old installer had some issues, on VISTA, for example, it required Admin rights to install.

You should uninstall Deluge, and delete all data folders and program files folders.

Reinstall with the new version, posted recently, and you should be good to go.

Okay, I know how to uninstall Deluge; but there was a message during the installation process that warned that if I need to uninstall, to make sure to uninstall GTK+. Is there anything special I need to know to do that? Thanks.

Okay:

I uninstalled Deluge, GTK and used the new 1.2.1 installer. Same result. Same error message.

I also tried the 1.2.0 installer and got the same error message, so the problem is probably not the new versions of installers; but something in the program itself. What's can I try next?

Thanks.

Okay, I realized I needed some C++ files to update my XP installation so Deluge would work. I did that and re-downloaded and installed Deluge. This time I got by the 14001 error; but when I double-click on the Deluge icon, a DOS-like window opens briefly and then disappears. There's no other evidence that Deluge is opened. No GUI, nothing in the system tray, etc. Nothing like the screenshots.

I think I mostly resolved the problem. The first time I tried to run the program, nothing happened but that quick flash of a DOS window. However, I managed to get the GUI up. Then I got the, "Have to cancel Classic" because the Daemon was still running. So I cancelled Classic and re-synched everything (Daemon off, GUI off) and then found how to re-select classic. From now on I know to quit both GUI and Daemon at the same time.

Now, is there a tutorial on how to actually use Deluge? I'm a total newbie to BitTorrent, so I'm not sure how to go and retrieve Torrents. I picked Deluge after some research; but one or two other BT clients either work in a browser window or have a browser-like interface to browse for torrents. I checked out the screenshots; but they don't really detail how to go out, find, and retrieve torrents.

Thanks.
