Seed peer selection

Post by dahl »

As initial seed, would it be possible to prioritize peers with few pieces and choke peers with many pieces without breaking protocol?

Initial seed or super seed as it's sometimes called is currently not available in deluge. As for the rest of your question, this violates the idea of what initial seeding is all about... the idea is to get the file out to the fastest sharers with as minimum upload as possible from the initial seeder.
Actual super seeding itself does not break bittorrent protocol.

I'm not talking about superseeding (unfortunate choice of words, my bad)
but rather a way to ensure an even distribution of pieces between first peers.
It might not be as fast as superseed but should increase swarm health.

In that case then I don't believe what you suggest would be possible, anyone who knows correct me if I'm wrong. It got me thinking about how an actual torrent would behave under such circumstances...
As far as speed, I can imagine it being quite a bit slower than with super seed, maybe even slower than regular seeding. So why not just use super seeding? It should create healthy seeds with the fastest speeds (since they share out exclusive pieces faster and can get new exclusive pieces to share with the swarm) rather than likely slow seeds. (Sorry, I don't know how else to explain it, it makes since in my head at least.)
What you suggest would cause you to upload much more than usual, if it worked correctly the way you describe it it would likely be sending pieces to people who've just joined the swarm and also are probably not yet fully connected to all other peers.

I see. It does sounds nice in theory but yeah, it'd probably be called superslowseed due to low bandwidth peers :)
Thanks for your time loki
