Ubuntu, Firefox, Deluge, File associations (.torrent)

Post by Ux64 »

Hi,

I have strange problem. For some reason I can open .torrent files which are referred directly from tracker without any problems. But when I open torrent files which are attachments to trackers message board then I'll get message that Helper Application is missing, even if action says Deluge Bittorrent Client (default). I'm using the same deluge to open those as I'm using to open any other torrents. If I pick from list plain "deluge" then it seems to work. How I can fix that? Remove incorrect entry and set deluge as only option.

I wonder if MIME type is different for those torrents which are attachments? If I save those as file and open then using double click from nautilus or open using Deluge I don't experience any problems. And I can't make any changes using nautilus open with options, because those are correct already and show only one option.

Any ideas how to fix that easily?

Have you tried changing the settings in Firefox?

Edit\Preferences\Applications\Bit Torrent seed file

there you can set up the application you want Firefox to use. Right now I'd guess it says "Always Ask" (default)

Thanks! Great hint, I found what I were looking for. But still there are some funny UI problems preventing me to fix the problem...

I want it to be always ask so I can save or open with deluge. I still wonder why there are stupid options like "Deluge BitTorrent Client" that doesn't ever work.

And big applause to firefox interface designers, because that user interface doesn't allow me to remove that invalid option. I can add new, remove it, but I can't remove that invalid option which is persistent. ;(

Here's the screen shot. Second bittorrent row works correctly. It promprs if I want to use deluge or save file. First one prompts if I want to use deluge bittorrent client, deluge or save file. But if I choose to use deluge bit torrent client, it says that helper apllication is missing. If I add new Deluge option to that first list, then I have option to use deluge, deluge or save file, as in my screenshot. And that first one deluge bittorrent client, which it suggest for me, naturally doesn't work. ;( I really enjoy it when very simple things are made hard. ;)

In /etc/mime.types there is only one bittorrent row.

Code: Select all

application/x-bittorrent torrent
This problem might be related to the fact, that I have been using deluge for LONG LONG time. So it might refer to some old version or so.

Can I "hard edit" that list somewhere to get rid of that entry?

I assume that I need to edit MimeTypes.rdf file. It's bit messy, but I guess I'll manage it. Unfotunately just that entry that I'm not looking for isn't clearly available. I can't find that "Pretty name" from it. I wonder where that name is coming from if it isn't coming from this file?

It took about 30 minutes trough trial and error to find what I need to delete from that file. Now deluge is being suggested for all .torrent downloads. Altough for some reason that Deluge BitTorrent Client entry is STILL in the list, it's not the default option which I can't change. Problem soveld. But this is quite annoying anyway. And result isn't prefect, because that invalid entry is still on list.
