Deluge freezing my router/modem?

Post by srv1973 »

Hi all,

Since about just over a month I'm having trouble with either my wireless router (buffalo) or my ADSL modem (D-Link) 'freezing'. I'm not really sure which one it is, I suspect its my modem though. The symptoms are mainly that the ASL connection gets dropped very often, DNS doesn't seem to work, and the web-based admin GUI doesn't respond anymore.

Normally I have Deluge open and downloading all day. But yesterday I was only using a VPN client and Firefox, and I noticed that my internet connection was behaving perfectly. As a test, I started Deluge, and lo-and-behold, the bloody thing froze on me!

As another test, I stopped deluge, and opened my torrents in utorrent (with wine under Ubuntu 8.10). My connection/modem keeps working fine! No problems whatsoever (except that my torrent downloads are slower then I would expect based on previous experience).

Has anybody else seen problems with deluge 'overloading' a router/modem? Is it even possible that my issues can be attributed to a piece of software?

It's very possible that deluge is overloading your router; try lower the number of maximum connections.
if that doesn't work you should also try disabling DHT/Peer Exchange/LSD as they can also cause router issues.

Have the same problem with 1.1.0,deluge freezes my connection and I needed to restart my router every 30-60 minutes to make network performance better.
Solved with the new 1.1.1 deluge version... :D (great release!)

Hi,

It's still strange. I never used to have this problem before. I started getting slow downloads somewhere mid-december, but I thought they were due to the cable breakages in the Mediterranean (I'm based in the middle east). But that damage has been repaired for weeks now. And on top of the slow speeds I got my modem hanging up all the time.

As I mentioned, I'm also using utorrent with wine under my Ubuntu installation, and its working fine (download speeds are still a tad slower than expected though). I've got Deluge 1.1.1 configured with *lower* settings than utorrent (lower number of connections, half-open connections etc), and I can't get any decent speeds out of it anymore. If I increase the network settings, my modem hangs again.

Somebody else mentioned that he had similar problems with 1.1.0, which were solved in 1.1.1. Perhaps there is still something lurking there?

I encountered this problem with 1.1.2, though it's really because I wiped my deluge config directory which reset my previously more conservative network connection values.

With the default values, my trendnet router will lock up and reset about every single minute(!). I have to lower the half open connections, max connections, and attempts per second to 1/5th the default value before I get any reasonable stability.

Is it really too much to ask for that companies put out products that don't completely suck and can actually handle more net traffic than what simply web browsing creates?
