Deluge without Boost?

Post by fyn »

I'm a bit of a semi-n00b with linux, I've only been using it as my main OS for a little over a year. So this may well be a very dumb question....

Is there any likely-hood of a future version of Deluge which does not depend on Boost?

Or at least not on the whole boost package? I ask this because for a light-weight BT client deluge sure weighs in heavy when Boost is taken into the equation. This is a copy of what's needed to upgrade my current 0.9.* version of Deluge to the most recent version:-

Targets (2): boost-1.36.0-1 deluge-1.0.0-1

Total Download Size: 19.31 MB
Total Installed Size: 121.88 MB

My current version of boost-1.34 takes up only 50mb of space installed, the newer one takes up over twice that amount of space. It's worth mentioning that Deluge is the only program I've currently got installed which requires boost as a dependency. This doesn't really make Deluge as attractive for people looking for a slim, fast, bloat free OS. (and definitely not so attractive for those with an old PC/laptop with limited HDD space)

I've noticed that Opera has Qt3 as a dependency, but it also has a smaller package available which just seems to have the parts of Qt needed for Opera to function (think it was called Opera-static-qt) thus forgoing the need to download/compile qt for Opera to run. The smaller package almost halves the size of their install.

Is it likely that such a thing will be possible for Deluge in the dim and distant future? Because at the moment, taking boost into account, my BT client is virtually taking up as much HDD space as my full Open Office suite !

I think he was also asking if it were possible to have a static build of deluge.
