Deluge users everywhere...Deluge 0.5.8RC1 Released!

Let's be honest - directly integrating torrent search and anon-browser sucks... especially if turning off the latter doesn't cause the button to disappear. It bloats Deluge with a secondary feature.
torrent search made a great plugin, and so would the anon-browser. That's why there were plugins in the first place, right?

As for the anon-browser itself... why not simply integrate TOR? That would solve the money problem easily... and thus, the ad nuisance.
Not to mention that openly running a filesharing-related, ad-sponsored proxy server is legal suicide. Honestly, you guys are making yourself a target.

I want to start by saying thank you to the Deluge team. This software is developing really well. Just a few points:

1/ I have to agree with people asking to make sure browsing/search are full plugins and when unselected are removed from the UI (is there any reason this isn't possible?) I understand the devs weren't too worried as when deactivated they take zero resources, but I guess they do take up (clutter?) the UI even when deactivated.

2/ I have a small problem with the ads in the browser. When I click on an ad it displays the linked website inside the ad box. So I click on a Google ad and rather than the main browser window changing to the linked website or a new window opening the actual area where the ad was becomes the new website.

3/ I loved the fact you kept these changes for a surprise. Great idea.

the only problem with integrating TOR is that the TOR network isn't very secure, at least as it's currently implemented. There have been TOR nodes that are intentionally misconfigured so that a specific type of traffic is not anonymized, and there's currently no way of avoiding specific nodes. Also there are some police forces around the world that have been targeting TOR nodes in investigations. Granted, as mentioned running your own anonymous server isn't really a perfect solution either, I'm sure that there's a perfect solution out there somewhere though.

I too, feel that the web proxy feature should be implemented through a plug-in instead.

Don't get me wrong, deluge is a great client and i really thank the developers for it. However in all honesty (and in my opinion) the proxy feature isn't justified to be part of the base client.

I wanted to register just to comment on this. I echo everyone else in saying that I truly appreciate the great effort you put into this project - I switched to Linux (Ubuntu) last year and was so glad to find Deluge! I may even need or want the anonymous browser functionality as some point, but I would really appreciate having this optional, ideally as a plugin. If that isn't possible, how about making it so it isn't visible at all when switched off?

The thing that brought me to Deluge in the first place is how lean and mean it is - it just works. The options are wonderful but there are other BT clients out there loaded with bling. Plugins allow us to make it as loaded or lean as we want, and I think that goes along with the philosophy of Linux in general, and Gnome specifically (I realize it is now packaged for other platforms, but it started here).

That's my 2 cents. Thanks again for having such passion for your work, and I hope you will take all this positive feedback to heart.

Just one thing about the new version...
Ctrl+A was already "select all" (which I use a lot), I think Ctrl+N might be better for adding a torrent.

Also while the new features are awesome, it seems kind of odd that Torrent File and Peers information is only available with a plugin, but a whole anonymous web browser is built in.

this is misleading. really, it uses the browser on your system, so deluge isnt adding a bunch of stuff. if you have firefox, it uses that. if you have ie, it uses that. it's not like we've included our own rendering engine. it's very, very light code.

Couldn't you just use TOR as a proxy, it seems like a very expensive move to make your own proxy service.

yes, we can hide it from the ui. i'll do that.

yes, we'll fix this. we'll allow people to popup the sites (both the main site and/or the footer/ad site) into their external browser, too, in case we have a site blocked, etc. this is an RC...we'll get it done [/quote]

svn rev 2445 hides the browser from the ui if not selected in preferences and add new torrent has been changed to ctrl+n

I already have it installed. See my reply under that, I think the problem is that Deluge doesn't create bookmarks.save. I don't have any bookmarks.save in my ~/.conf/deluge/mozilla. There are two files in ~/.conf/deluge/mozilla/, mimeTypes.rdf and prefs.js.

BTW: I know that my python-gnome2-extras works great because I have Miro installed in my system.
