Deluge on Debian

Post by Exinferis »

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me out here. I've been searching for a solution to this problem for the past three days but I can't solve it. I've been trying to install Deluge on a Debian box with KDE. I'm not, and let me make this clear, not good with Linux! I find it hard to use and very complicated when setting anything up on it, so please bear with me.

I keep trying to install deluge by either apt-get install deluge-torrent or by downloading and opening with KDE's inbuilt manager, but I get constant errors:

I have tried several times to get these packages installed, but they're not in the package manager and I don't know the code to apt-get them. Did try, but kept getting errors, so I'm obviously doing something wrong!

I did see something in the FAQ of the forum (sticky) that looked like it could be a solution but it's all Greek to me! So, does anyone have a simple solution that a Linuxphobe like me can understand?

Many thanks,
Ex.

It appears you are trying to install a Lenny deb on an Etch system. You need the Etch backport for your system. It can be found here:

I would strongly suggest not using the back-port version.. It is very old and likely does not work properly.

It doesn't have the pizazz of the later versions, but it works well enough. I've used it extensively on older machines. The only other solution I can see is if Ex compiled from source, and since he or she isn't that comfortable with Linux yet, that's probably not a good idea. :?

Thanks all for all your help. I still can't get it to work. I'm thinking that it's down to Debian, so I'm considering installing Ubuntu instead. Has anyone had trouble with Ubuntu? It's not based on Debian is it? That'd be a wate of time if it is! My choices are:

Debian (Etch) which we know is trouble
Gentoo 2007.0
Fedora Core 8
CentOS 5.0
Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS

What's the prefered system for Deluge?

Thanks again. :D

Ubuntu is based on Debian, but its developers have modified it considerably. That would be the way to go as Ubuntu is generally considered the most NOOB friendly distro. There are deb files compiled especially for Ubuntu on this website. If you choose that route, just make sure you select the correct architecture...ie....32 or 64 bit and that the version number matches that of your Ubuntu install (current Ubuntu stable is 8.04). I notice you have "Ubuntu Server" listed---this is NOT what you want. Make sure you choose a desktop Ubuntu such as Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS (not server) Kubuntu or Xubuntu. If you install the server version you will end up without a graphical user interface (no desktop) and you will cry.

A note should be made at this point--Deluge is a GTK application, and that means its really designed to run with the GNOME GUI, not KDE.

Too bad Debian didn't work out for you. I use it as my primary OS (I use Lenny--Testing Beta2) and prefer it to Ubuntu as its more stable. Ubuntu is often easier to use for those less technically inclined, however. I noticed you are using KDE with Debian--if you should ever try pure Debian again, go with the default GNOME install. Debian is really a GNOME distro, and in my opinion things are easier to work out when you stick with the default scheme. If you really hit it off with Ubuntu and are attached to KDE, go with Kubuntu, which is the KDE version of Ubuntu. Good luck (its Linux--luck helps)

Thanks for the reply nudnik. Those listed are the only choices I have (renting a server for use as seedbox and these are the only disro's available). I'm not fussed about the GUI as I know how to install, thankfully! I was thinking going the Fluxbox route actually, as I only have a limited amount of space and that's the lightest GUI I could find. Basically all it has to do is run Deluge and Firefox, nothing else needed. I could even do without Firefox as I can just FTP the .torrent files to the 'box.

I've used Kubuntu at home ad it is a good disro, I do like it, but can't get over this mental block I seem to have with all the command line editing! Ah well, will get the hang of it one day I 'spose.

Edit: OK, managed to sort everything, more or less. Reinstalled my server with Debian (Etch) which is what I had already. Installed Fluxbox (which is what I wanted) and, with the help of someone on another forum, managed to install Deluge with apt-get after adding backports to the sources.list and et voila! Only minor problem is that I've managed to get the older version that, although works a treat, doesn't have any configuration options, which is a slight pain. Still, at least it's running now, but if anyone does have any ideas of how to update the old version (0.5) to a newer version that'd be great! :D

The only way I'd recommend an upgrade is to compile a newer version from source. I've never bothered to compile Deluge from source, so I'll let someone else tackle that one if they are so inclined.
