Hidden IPs in peer list

Hi guys,

Like many others I'm looking into how to hide my IP. I figured the only way was VPN/proxy but then I noticed something in my peers list for a torrent. While most had a visible IP, some had a mac-address-like-IP. How did they achieve that?

Can you please explain? What does using ipv6 accomplish? Are IPs hidden from peers?

Could it be forced encryption?
