I've done this many times before in other Bittorrent clients (and I'm sure I've done it in Deluge as well).
But when I tried it today, it first checks the file (as usual) but after it gets to 100% that the torrent is removed from my list. It normally would start seeding then.
I'm running 0.5.8.6 on Fedora 9.
I can't addi a .torrent for an existing file for seeding.

I've noticed this, it might be related, if you deleted the torrent file before it has a chance to fully load the blocklist plugin when its first starting, it removes the torrent. This particular problem appears to be fixed in the latest version I'm using. (0.5.8.9)

In my case, I'm not using the blocklist plugin.
