downloading double the data thanks to unwanted files

Post by finnero »

Okay, I'm aware that Deluge has an issue where it downloads parts of unwanted files:

http://forum.deluge-torrent.org/viewtop ... =7&t=34235

However, it's not just small parts of unwanted files it's downloading. Say I'm downloading 1 or 2 files in a torrent, and skipping the rest. The total of the selected files is around 50mb total. When finished, the total folder size is closer to 100mb!! Deluge is downloading almost double the amount I need! And it does this for every download where I select partial files. If I want 2 or 3 files it downloads 5 or 6.

Is there any way to limit how this happens? I know there's a plugin to delete the unwanted files after you delete the torrent, but that isn't want I want. I want to not download so much additional data for zero reason. It adds up. 20gb of partial files ends up with close to 40gb total downloaded - almost 20gb of junk to be deleted. This is ridiculous, and no other torrent program I've used does all this needless downloading. Can anything be done?

Lol, I know this. That's why I started by saying, "Okay, I'm aware that Deluge has an issue where it downloads parts of unwanted files".

But is it normal that it should be downloading double the data? Why doesn't utorrent or Tixati download twice the amount of data when I select individual files?

How can Deluge by useful when it downloads twice the data selected?

For instance - a single folder says:

size: 294 MB (309,265,731 bytes)
size on disk: 99.0 MB (103,886,848 bytes)

It's triple the size! I wanted 99mb of files, and it downloaded 294mb!

I wanted file # 5. It downloaded files 4,5 10, and a few kilobytes of 6. This cannot be the way it should work. Why did it download file 10? It's nowhere close to file 5.

I have "use compact allocation" selected.

It has not downloaded any more data, size on disk is the amount downloaded and the real size of the file(s). How the files are sorted for user has no bearing on how they are mapped on the disc.

Do not select 'compact allocation' if you want to use 'Do not Download': http://dev.deluge-torrent.org/wiki/Faq# ... ng.Howcome

Okay, I understand now. Thank you. This was very confusing to me.

I had full allocation selected until this morning. I switched to compact for a few hours this morning. I just switched back to full. So what happened to the files/folders that I downloaded this morning while compact was selected but I had selected "do not download" for some files? Will those downloads be affected or messed up? Will all the selected files still be complete? Should I force re-check now?

Changing that option would only affect torrents added to deluge so if you find any torrent you cannot change file priority on you would need to remove (with data) and re-add.

Thanks a ton for helping out! Ah, I see - I was just reading about that here:

http://dev.deluge-torrent.org/ticket/1160

"However, if I switch to full allocation, add my torrent and select the files I want, I can happily switch back to compact allocation thereafter and everything’s fine."

"You aren't actually changing the allocation for the torrent, you are just changing the allocation for all future added torrents. Changing the allocation in preferences doesn't change it for currently added torrents."

So all of the torrents I have been downloading during compact this morning I had already added when it was set to full, so I guess I'm okay I guess? Do the torrents have to be started or scraped first for this to matter? I had a lot of torrents added but I added them all paused while set to full allocation. They didn't scrape or start downloading. Then this morning I set it to compact for a while and started the downloads. Since they were added paused while in full, does it matter that I switched to compact this morning for a while?
