Is It Possible To Code Deluge With Another Language/Toolkit?

Post by DasFox »

I'm a Linux geek so I know GTK very well, but to me this is the Unix/Linux world not the Windows environment.

GTK was originally designed for X Windows and of course over the years has been ported to Windows.

Now bloat, for what that subject is worth, still means something to some people.

For me having to install GTK just to use an applications in the Windows environment, especially if there are good alternatives is bloat.

I mean no disrespect here, I only wish to point out a flaw, that unless you can change the Language/Toolkit if possible, you're never going to grow a Windows user-base, because people aren't going to want to install GTK to get a bittorrent client when they can simply go out and install uTorrent which to them is simpler and smaller to deal with. Or Deluge does become so great you get away with it, only time will tell.

Now some might argue about the popularity of Gimp in the Windows environment, I'm sorry Gimp has no real competition as a client in Windows that's why it has the popularity it does and Deluge doesn't because Deluge has competition called uTorrent that doesn't need any extra added dependencies that people don't want to deal with.

There are only two popular programs in GTK for Windows, GIMP and Pidgin.

If you don't care anything about the growth for a Windows port that's fine, because it will never grow as a GTK client in Windows until the day comes when GTK is the accpeted norm in Windows and I don't see that ever happening.

So my question is, can you change the Language/Toolkit so Windows users don't need GTK, or would you at least care to change it to bring a better client to Windows to really compete against uTorrent?

THANKS

P.S. The alternative if you can't get away from GTK is to package it in the installer like GImp and Pidgin do then. ;)

so your a linux geek, good for you.

Im sure the developers dont want some asshole telling them in baby language who their competition are.

Here are 3 VERY good reasons why people will use deluge over utorrent

1. ITS NOT OWNED BY THE MPAA.

2. Its the only open source application that brings competition to the table

3. Its coded in python

You wanna see bloatware go take a look at vuze

If you EVEN have installed Deluge (which i believe you have not), you would know that it is packaged with gtk.

Guess what buddy, more people using windows are switching to Deluge everyday, your words mean nothing.

You know what, i bet you a troll, the only reason you are here is for a motive, go piss off somewhere else.

I see no forum is free of fanboy posts like that. :)

Well let me give you 3 reasons why i would not use Deluge even thought i would like to:

1. Its buggy.

2. It takes up to 4 or 5 times the memory and about double or more the CPU uTorrent does.

3. Windows port seems to be badly maintained.

And please don't take this as a personal offend again, otherwise this is not the right place for you.

Im not a fanboy, but what this guy is asking is to change the programming language of Deluge because he has to take a couple of more seconds to install gtk, it seems observed. Python is a good language, its easy to read and understand which I believe will push developers to work on it. When you move on to a lower level language, the amount of developers are limited.

I understand its buggy, but in time it will be fixed as it grows in popularity

p.s Looking back at the the post I went a bit overboard, I take back that last line in my first post and the part where i called you an asshole (I would remove it but I don't remember the account information)
