the point is that debian etch doesnt have a new enough version of python-gtk2 to work with deluge. we require >= 2.9, which is actually pretty old, but not by debian stable standards.paxcoder wrote:I have the newest Debian, and.... well, frankly, I don't see the point of releasing for distros that don't yet officially exist, but ok. Still think it was you, hehe. Anyway, I'm trying the source now... We'll see how that'll turn out.
No hard feelings.

Oh, ok. Debian is kinda funny that way. Does that mean that I shouldn't be able to build it, not even from the source? Should I build new GTK, or what?markybob wrote: the point is that debian etch doesnt have a new enough version of python-gtk2 to work with deluge. we require >= 2.9, which is actually pretty old, but not by debian stable standards.

you'll probably be able to build, just not run. i think your best shot would be to head into #debian on irc and ask if anyone knows of a python-gtk2 backport for etch. i'm sure someone has to have it somewherepaxcoder wrote:Oh, ok. Re: Deluge 0.53 won't install on Feisty
need libc6: translate: it means needs python-gtk*
download python gtk source, try to build, needs pygobject*
ok, download that source - no, needs newer.
download the newest (it realy did say so) doesent compile/needs newer!
download newer (yes, newer than newest, did you know that was possible?) from another site
thousants of combinations and downloads. ok, good versions. python gtk finally configures properly, but still doesen't compile!
gave up that idea (after hours of trying!), try repositories
moving to deb repositories (finaly folowed all the right links to get to .deb), found dulge-torrent in test
ok, install the test thingy. no, needs newer pygtk. ok, it has that 2. nice, download that.
try to run pygtk2 deb. no, deinstall pygtk
ok, apt-get. says: wat to deinstall everything based on gtk2? (Y) NO!!! (Ctrl+C Ctrl+C Ctrl+C Ctrl+C)
that was my day how was yours?
PS. No, I didn't make it. It's freakin impossible!

and now you know why we only provide packages for testing and unstable.paxcoder wrote:need libc6: translate: it means needs python-gtk*

Re: Deluge 0.53 won't install on Feisty
What is it that you use, that is so important and missing in the older version of pyGTK?
Debian is one of the most wide-spread distributions, so this is - in my opinion - just a silly thing that makes deluge less competitive, and not available for all users possible, like it should be.

Re: Deluge 0.53 won't install on Feisty
for servers, debian stable is one of the most widespread distros, but not for desktops it's not. most people who run debian desktops use testing and unstable. debian stable desktops are more or less non-existent. also, every stable distro out there with the exception of debian stable has python-gtk2 >=2.9. debian is the only one that doesnt. there are a lot of issues...the tray icon wouldnt even work as its currently coded.paxcoder wrote:What is it that you use, that is so important and missing in the older version of pyGTK?
