Idea: Deluge with Rapidshare support?

During the last year I have noticed many users moving from torrent to rapidshare (or the likes). Whether this move happened because of the guaranteed high speeds (if you get a premium account), because downloading is legal in many countries (while uploading/sharing makes it illegal), or because they just generally feel more secure, I cannot tell. But it surely is a fact. Now there is one problem, rapidshare as a website is not convenient to use. Many downloads are split into seperate rar files, password protected, etc. There is of course a solution, like JDownloader. Now, wouldn't it be great if Deluge could implement the JDownloader features too and become an all-in-one solution? Whether the future is now torrent, rapidshare or something completely different, Deluge would have the chance to offer it all in a single interface.

What do you think, is it possible to do - would it make sense?

I suppose this is feasible within a plugin, although it'd be an incredibly invasive plugin. It's actually something I've pondered over before. If there are any volunteers in writing this then it would certainly be interesting to see.

There's no need for Deluge to be anything more than a light weight BitTorrent downloader (to the developers) because in a cost-benefit approach, unless Deluge goes the route of Opera and tries to become an all-in-one approach (jack of all trades, master of none), developing a single specific plug-in that is different from the core purpose of Deluge is not worth it. It will not bring in enough users. What you are looking for essentially is for Deluge to become something it is not. Deluge's internal browser isn't that popular anyway.

DownthemAll! and download manager+webbrowsers work fine for rapidshare downloading anyway, unless you are doing something illegal, which is not supported on the forum (afaik) anyway. Last I checked, there were more than 20 download managers listed on wikipedia.

On the other hand, if someone else were interested in making the plug-in, there's nothing stating that they shouldn't. Rather I feel the developer's time is best spent working on the main application, instead of trivial plug-ins (for features already served by other applications) such as this.

fair enough, I do agree that focusing on the core functionality should be the priority. However, whether it is illegal or not, there is a move from torrents towards file hosters (just see stats on where internet traffic comes from) and it would be worth while thinking if deluge wants to be on that train. As for illegal/legal downloads, it's surely worth pointing out that it is not illegal to download copyrighted movies/music in Austria under the current legislation. It is illegal to upload it, however. Similar jurisdiction exists in various other countries and this clearly favours the use of file hosters such as rapidshare.

i have partially shifted to using rapidshare. Some files I still use torrent and some i uses rapidshare.

The thing is, there are already lots of download managers out there that can manage rapidshare downloads. There really is no reason to use deluge as rapidshare downloader. Better let it stick to what it does best and that's downloading torrent. And at deluge's current state, there are lots of things that still need to be done be it fixing bugs or adding features.

Free download managers are a plenty out there for all sort of platforms. I personally am using aria2c (a text based downloader) for rapidshare. Coincidently aria2c also have torrent capability. Though it lacks advanced encryption stuffs that can bypass my ISP like deluge.

Unfortunately Rapidshare sucks. It's slow, delays, file size limits, etc. There are many other better services, and with those you don't need any manager, because you can download gigabytes of stuff in minutes. Default firefox / ie download feature is more than sufficient. Unfortunately Rapidshare is way out of that league, in negative terms.
