I would look into ssh tunneling exposed on a non standard port using public/private keys instead of passwords.

Best practice would be to kill Deluge entirely when the VPN dies. There are applications that can do this for you such as VPNetMon:

This app can also be configured to restart Deluge when the VPN comes back up, but I would be very careful with that option.

I suspect that if you have current connections running thru a properly configured proxy, those connections will continue even if you change the proxy credentials to some incorrect form. But any new connections due to newly added torrents might fail. Have you tested the latter?

Are you using any of the available torrents or magnet links that show you the IP address their tracker sees?
