Deluge doesn't use Gnome default media player

When I double-click a video file (.avi for example) in Deluge, the Totem media player is started rather than my Gnome default media player, VLC (specified in System -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications and in Evolution's file properties). Any idea whether this is a Deluge bug or a missed configuration in Gnome?
System: Ubuntu 8.04, Gnome 2.22, Deluge 0.9.04

After some additional poking around, I found a number of Gnome URL handlers still set to Totem. So, I'm going to assume Deluge is using a URL to launch files. Question is, which one would be fired for video files, in this case .avi?

if you double click a .avi in nautilus does it open it with vlc?
you can also right click on a .avi (in nautilus), select properties and under open with double check it's vlc.

We use 'xdg-open' to open files.. In a Gnome environment, this usually uses 'gnome-open' to open the file. So check your settings in Gnome..
