I don't think deluge is killing your computer. what exactly is happening? the whole computer hangs? the program hangs?

I have updated deluge today (0.9.02) and it keeps hanging from time to time. It takes from 5 to 90% of CPU time - for about half a minute 0-5% and for another minute or two about 30-90%.
Older versions had similar problems, but not so disturbing - so high CPU times occured more seldom.
I would not complain, but it often loses downloaded files too. Deluge hangs, after re-opening it checks downloaded files and suddenly it occures that instead of 70% it has only 20% downloaded. And the ratio on torrent sites keeps going down
I use Ubuntu 8.04, have compiz on, my CPU is AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1GB RAM and loads of free disk space.
Edit: Installing newer version (0.9.03) haven't imroved almost anything, the computer still hangs from while to while so I decided to install Transmission. It isn't so useable as deluge, but doesn't kill my computer...

I have just experienced a strange bug of running compiz and deluge.
If (and only if) the compiz "Window Decorator" plugin was activated and i unminimized deluge form the tray, the computer would crash. I have narrowed it down to the activated "Window Decorator" plugin. To get rid of it I have reset the "Window Decorator" config and now no crashes at all. Deluge was the only app that crashed the computer by the way. Maybe this info helps someone.

Dunno about your specific Deluge problem, but if you're after a light distro, why in the world are you using ubuntu? Give
Arch Linux a try. You can use a lighter DE if you want such as xfce4. The
Arch philosophy is very suited to your hardware, and their software repos have deluge and most everything else you'll want.
...off my soap box

Another option for lower end machines would be xubuntu, it still uses ubuntu repositories but uses xfce for the default window manager.
