Changing Download location

I would like to change the download location to an external hard drive. Under "Preferences", "Download to" does not seem to see my drive. Any advice?

Open Preferences - Downloads - Download to:
and click on the black folder to open selection and scroll down the bottom to Other Locations and change to the Volume that contains your external hard drive and select that. At least that is what I did on High Sierra.
(Just installed this today and it works. Thank you to all contributors for this newer version.)
