Grrr... 5200+ torrent files deleted... why?

I've been a longtime uTorrent user, so please bear with me. I recently tried unsuccessfully to snatch a torrent using uTorrent, due to "invalid path in torrent" (i.e. some filenames were too long, exceeding the 180 character limit). Fine. I've seen several users using Deluge, so I thought I might try it for a while, so I installed it. I successfully snatched the torrent. Sweet. Everything is cool. I then edited the offending filenames, and rebuilt the torrent in uT. Then, when I went to re-upload the torrent, I was horrified to find that ALL my torrent files (over 5200) were GONE. Deleted. It so happens that the week previous, my backup drive with my torrent files had failed under warranty. So all my torrent files are MIA. I know that they're somewhere, because Deluge knows where they are. OK, fine, again. I'll just find them and copy them back into the folder and everything will be cool again. So I searched my whole computer for *.torrent. I was then horrified for the second time in less than an hour when I found them on my C: drive... but they were all encrypted filenames. Really??? Fortunately, all the actual data is safe in the torrents, just the .torrent files are affected.
Is there any way to undo the damage? To un-encrypt, or de-crypt the torrent filenames? and WHY is this happening? I certainly never thought that Deluge would delete (technically, move and encrypt) my torrent files. If I had known this was gonna happen, obviously I would never have installed it. I thought I was being smart when I clicked the box to "Copy new torrents from...". That box should be renamed, or some kind of disclosure that it will remove all torrents from the folder that the user selects. That seems to be a pretty major bit of information that might be useful to the user. It doesn't "Copy", it "Moves and Encrypts". Not the same thing.
Well, now that I've ranted, I probably don't deserve any positive replies here, but it's just so frustrating to see all these years of work suddenly gone, and a mountain of work to rebuild all these torrents. I've used several different bitorrent clients over the years, but none of them have done this.
p.s. I know the most obvious answer would be to keep using Deluge, and not sweat it. And I may do that, but I still want my regular, normal torrent files back.
