Deluge on Debian - deluged dies - steps to debug?

I appreciate the package a great deal, I like the remote management, x-platform and UI of Deluge over alternative options

However, I'd like to run a lightweight linux server and I have tried (1) pi (2) a debian vmware fusion vm on mac and (3) a dedicated old laptop running debian. All of these solutions have the same behaviour - the deluged process dies after time, either short (< 5m) or long (> 15m, so not very long).

Deluge is running nicely on an old laptop with win7 and I am considering a move to a win7 vm on my macmini (which is always on, low power, quiet). I would like my torrent device encapsulated and separate from my day-to-day macmini, so don't want to run on osx.

I am an IT pro with decent *ix experience, so happy to do some logging and analysis and debug if required.

I'd appreciate some pointers on logging deluged, and/or any monitoring shell scripts out there. Please drop me any links or comments.
