excessive hash failures - 5.8.7 - XP.SP2

5.8.7 on XP.SP2
Logging enabled.
Download speed drops rapidly after starting a torrent and log is full of hash failures and peer bans.
Also tons of invalid requests from Mainline 5.0.9.
Capping download speed to half my bandwidth does not improve situation.
Torrent slows to crawl after about 30 min. to 1 hr. because all the good seeders have been banned?
It also seems that it connects best to 'non-Azureus' peers such as utorrent-I'm connected to many Azureus peers but few seem to send bits. Azureus v.3x sends/receives best, the v.2x next to nil and very quick disconnects.
I think most of the utorrent peers get banned for too many hash failures perhaps because of the peer.lazy_bitfield=on setting available in utorrent under advanced settings.
