I'm a complete noob at this, have only used bittorrent before and that not very much, so be forewarned this may sound like a pretty dumb question

My question is about the right upload setting. Speed test shows upload 0.53mb/s - but the preference settings are in KiBs. Do I need to convert that .53mb to kibs to mbs then divide by 8?

Would probably be more accurate to find a speedtest that gives you results in kbps and divide by 8. http://www.testmy.net actually gives all the numbers, the last one in (parentheses) is the one Deluge uses.
