No more packaged updates?

Post by r0ckarong »

I'm just wondering. I know you guys had some staff trouble and that your precompiled packages are maintained by other people but don't you have any say in that? GetDeb still lists only 1.1.6 and even your "own" PPA at Launchpad only carries the 1 month old 1.1.7. I don't want to install from source because, quite honestly, I think it's ridiculous to have to build something like that from the sourcecode and in case of removal dig around in my system files just to get rid of the sloppy installation process. I was very happy with the single .DEB that was provided by getdeb for a while but I've gotten used to installing through the multiple packages from the PPA as well. At least when I need to get rid of those (in case of an obvious error forcing me to downgrade) I can just slap the old version on and it's fine. I don't want to waste my time looking for leftover icons and crap like that. Could you please nudge your package maintainer over at launchpad and remind him that some people might want to use an up-to-date version? I know I sound pissy about this but for such an awesome client with a nice community like that and great progress so far, I personally think your means of "delivery" are not up to par. Many more people would probably be using the client if it was easy to keep up to date with it. All I know is that the update message in the client is pretty much an insult when you need to jump hoops to actually get the new version installed. It shouldn't be like that.

Keep up the great work but get a new package maintainer ... seriously.

1.1.8 was released a couple of days ago (late Thursday night), so you need to be patient as far as the PPA repository goes. Deluge developers only provide source tarballs; Linux packages are built by the deluge community.

Otherwise build from source. I understand that the PPA repository is convenient, but if you are willing to download a deb file and install that manually, the step to building from source yourself is not very big IMHO.
