Problems Adding Torrents (openSUSE)

I actually have two problems concerning Deluge. I have been unable to add torrents by opening them, and have been unable to get Deluge to recognize an open port. Both of these seem like Linux-specific problems, and are almost certainly due to my inexperience with it.

I am currently running openSUSE on a PC with the GNOME client. I started using Deluge because the default program, Monsoon, crashes every time I remove a torrent and has trouble accepting incoming connections.

When adding torrents to Deluge, I have no problem with manually entering in the url of the torrent. However, opening torrents in firefox, it only offers the option to open it in Monsoon. When I choose "Other," I see an application list and choose "deluge.desktop" - Nothing happens. I'm unsure of any other options, and when downloading torrents from sites requiring login authentication, I cannot manually add the url of the tracker into Deluge.

The other problem I have with Deluge is the fact that it doesn't recognize my port as open. I have gone into my router and entered every IP from .101 - .104, ports 6881-6889 and enabled them. I have also checked my IP by going into the GNOME command line and entering "ip addr." It shows my IP as .102. So I'm not sure why, when I click "Check Port" it shows me a yellow alert sign,

This is simply a case of telling Firefox what program to use. When you click the .torrent, you should get the Firefox Download window. Select "Open With" and Browse to the location of your deluge application's executable file (or the Linux equivalent ). Select "always use this" and click out.

You should never use 6881-6889. Although these are the default ports for Bittorrent, they're routinely blocked by ISPs. Use a port in the 40000-60000 range.

you should be able to right click on a .torrent and through properties change what the default client is.

I am able to do that, but Firefox still fails to recognize either Deluge or Transmission as possible programs. Going into Firefox Preferences > Applications, I'm able to view "Bit Torrent Seed File" and am given the options "Always Ask, Save File, Monsoon (Default), Use Other..., and Application Details" despite the fact that .torrent files default is now Deluge.

OK, try this:

/usr/bin/app

Look for Deluge.

Or i

/usr/share/bin/app

or something similar.

If you have a deluge.desktop, i.e. deluge on your desktop as an icon, right click and do properties. See what it links to. Chances are it's the executable.

Excellent, thank you for all the help. I am up and running on Deluge. Oddly, I do not have Deluge on my desktop, despite the .desktop file. No big deal. However, locating the program worked great. Sorry for the lack of knowledge, that was an important step in my path to getting to know Linux better.
