slow start

Hi im new to deluge, been using utorrent + wine or rtorrent before.
The problem i am having is that when i add a torrent it takes forever before it starts! it finds a lot of peers/seeds but it takes a long time before connecting.
im running deluge 1.1.5 on ubuntu 8.10
