Input/Output error on downloads (Ubuntu 8.10)

I'm using Deluge on Ubuntu 8.10.
When downloading some torrents, the download will halt and the status in the progress bar will read "Error x%".
When checking the 'Details' tab the 'Status' field reads "Input/output error".
It seems that on some torrents it happens and some it doesn't.
When it does, it can take several hours until it appears but it usually happens after less than one hour.
It happens in Deluge 1.1.2, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 (I'm fairly new to Deluge so they are the only versions I've experience with :) ).
I don't see any hint in Ubuntu that there is a problem with the disk itself or the filesystem... It happens both in my current and my previous drive, both using ext3 as the file system.

Please help :)
If you need any more information/pictures just ask :)
