Cannot upgrade from 0.5.6.25

Incredibly frustrating. I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 and Deluge 0.5.6.25. Today, Deluge ceased to download or upload - it did not crash and responds to controls, but can't send or receive.
I'd been meaning to upgrade anyway, so I downloaded the packages:
deluge-torrent_0.5.7.1-1_i386.gutsy.deb
deluge-torrent_0.5.8-1_i386.gutsy.deb
I could walk through my exact steps, but the short version is this: whether deluge is running or not, whether or not I uninstall with Synaptic before installing with GDebi, whether or not I completely uninstall, the result is the same - when I run Deluge again, I'm prompted to download a newer version and the Help->About shows the version to be 0.5.6.25. I do not get errors at install time or runtime.
If I install 5.8-1 with GDebi, it shows that version already installed.
Any ideas welcome.
