So, it wasn't my imagination after all! 
Woke up and found my torrents being uploaded up to 15 - 53 times! Confirmed with my ISP - I only uploaded some 20+ GB yesterday/this night, but according to ratio the numbers should be somewhere near 2TB!
Now I don't know which is worse, 0.5.8.6 method or the new one...
