It basically comes down to my preference as the author of this plugin. I find that a pieces bar makes it particularly difficult to distinguish individual pieces unless the bar is very, very long. Vertical scrolling is always much nicer than horizontal due to the scroll-wheel. Also, gui elements, such as progress bars eat up more resources than text elements (this is just the way things are with gtk) and I wanted to make this plugin as light as possible.

There's absolutely nothing stopping someone from coming up with a plugin that adds a pieces bar, it's just not going to be me, since I find it useless.

this plugin has been removed from trunk for various reasons. I don't plan on maintaining it any longer.
