Russians in the Peers List

Post by europe »

I am using old Deluge version 1.3.11. I noticed Russian flags in front of all IP addresses in tab Peers.

First, I've changed your post title.

Do you believe that people in Russia are not using bittorrent? I'm almost certain you are using public trackers based on this statement, but there's nothing wrong with russian peers as long as you get the torrent from a reputable source that you know isn't a virus or trojan or whatever. The torrent protocol sends pieces from peers to you in chunks and those chunks are validated before being written to your disk. You aren't going to end up with a virus via bittorrent just because the peers are from russia, but you can end up with a virus if you use public torrent sites and download sketchy "cracked" applications, keygens or games and things like that that need to be run...or if they contain some .exe or even a .url or .html file if your browser is outdated.

I'm also not sure why you're using Deluge 1.3.11....that's not even the last iteration of 1.3.x, so you're extremely out of date. We are on 2.2.0 now.

Also you can get an up to date GeoIP.dat file for deluge from my post viewtopic.php?t=57673 and update your peers country associations by replacing it in your deluge folder.

Overall, it just sounds like you're paranoid and running extremely outdated version of Deluge, and probably only at risk due to using public trackers for content like I described above.
