Optimal settings for reducing SSD wear and tear

Post by hanschristian »

Hi.
I have a 8TB SSD, which will be my main download device. I will not move to HDD when downloaded.
Are there some optimal settings, to avoid unnecessary writing wear and tear on SSD?
Also does it make sense to talk about defragmentation of large files, when talking SSD?

Maybe preallocate files is a good idea when using HDD, to avoid defragmentation. What about SSD?

Thanks

Hi,

For an SSD disable preallocate and don't do defrag but check if trimming is done regularly. Most of the time defrag is replaced by trimming when a defrag is triggered but it depends of the OS.

Otherwise just use libtorrent default settings for all remaining parameters?
What about such parameters as cache?

No problem to use the default settings, the preallocate is not checked If I'm not wrong. But you would double check that.
About the cache since libtorrent 2.X it's no more relevant, the cache management is dropped at the application to the benefit of the OS cache management. (OS managed now so).

Once you have an idea about your setup performance you may want to check for the ltconfig plugin to have granular libtorrent control.
