Magnet links?

Post by test »

Hi, does deluge support magnet links at all?

Where I live serveral friends have an ISP (the most popular and cheapest) that block ".torrent" http/ftp downloads which is a shame but this is life here. Many migrated to linux and I helped them out with azureus. Is there any way to make magnet work with deluge? in svn? in roadmap?

thanks!

Deluge doesn't support Magnet URI's. This is the case because Azureus has Magnet URI's integrated into its DHT layer ... and Deluge uses Mainline DHT which doesn't support Magnet URI's in its DHT layer. Will it support it, well this is up to Bram to officially accept it and add it to Mainline DHT.

This question is again on the wall.

I found out that I can add torrents with info-hash, but I still weren't able to add using magnet url. I tried using url option with magnet link, copy pasted from Firefox to Deluge.

And why I ask for this...

You might also have noticed that the tracker has been down lately? And that the upload page don't recommend trackers anymore! The development of DHT has reached a stage where a tracker is no longer needed to use a torrent. DHT (combined with PEX) is highly effective in finding peers without the need for a centralized service. If you run uTorrent you might have noticed in the tracker tab of your torrents that the [Peer Exchange] (PEX) row is often reporting a lot more peers than the trackers you might have for that torrent. These peers all came to you without the use of a central tracker service! This is what we consider to be the future. Faster and more stability for the users because there is no central point to rely upon.
I know they still provide .torrent files and use often openbittorrent tracker. But it seems this is the way to go.

Yea, it appears that the pirate bay is using hex encoded magnet uris, which the add torrent dialog has problems with. The next release will address this.

If I download using infohash or magnet link, it seems that I can't select files which I would like to download in torrent.

Is that deluges "fault" or some generic con with hash based downloads? I think when it gets torrent size and other info at that point it also should allocate torrent and update filelist. Right?

Btw. Monova also uses DHT links like: dht://XXXE346DFC3146FAD018198D16A5717EB8A9AXXX.dht - Yes this one is deliberately scambled with XXX and XXX in front and end. But I assume that this kind of link should also work. It works if I take the hex part and use it as info-hash.

- Thanks

There is no file list because you do not have the metadata yet, ie, the info from the .torrent file. If you only have the info-hash, like in the case of a magnet uri, then you must wait until you retrieve the metadata from another peer before you can view the list of files.

I really have to say that it's not working as I would expect.

I have 100 seeds, I have all other torrent info available. I have downloaded 10% of data related to that torrent file and files in download path are created. But Files list is still totally empty.

I'm almost 99% sure that this is clear bug, and system simply doesn't work as you said. Now 50% of total download is compelete. I have 75 files in download path for this torrent with filenames, but Files pane is still totally empty. I think this is clear bug.

I'm using version 1.2.0-rc3.

Thanks. Good to know.

At least it doesn't seem to be available yet. But no panic. It's just enough that I know it's fixed.

It seems that launchpad doesn't have latest (compiled) version out for distribution (Ubuntu Jaunty X64). That's why I didn't get newer version even I tried update before filing report.
