New user, can't get things working properly

Post by kheldar »

I hate that I have to even make this post, as I rarely need help in getting anything computer related to work correctly. But in this case, I'm stuck. I've read the FAQ which ultimately just led me back to suggestions to read the FAQ. I've read forum posts but they have either not helped or gotten me even more lost. Hoping someone can set me straight here.

I'm running OSX Mountain Lion on my headless mac mini. Been using UTorrent but I really like the idea of being able to access my Torrent UI directly from a remote machine without having to use Remote Desktop.

I've downloaded the latest OSX package and installed it. It runs fine, but I've been unable to figure out how to access it remotely. I have allowed remote connections, and turned off random port. I've tried remotely accessing both the port that Deluge says is the "active port" (6881) as well as the daemon port (58846) but neither results in any connection.

Do I need to enable some port forwarding on my LAN or something? Am I missing something else?

Additionally, I've read about how to get Daemon working (though I thought it was already running if the app is running...), and there are mentions of command line functions (deluged, deluge-console, deluge-web, etc.) that don't work for me. I'm guessing it's because I didn't do a MacPorts installation, but the instructions specifically say it's better to use the binary so... I did. Not sure if the command line functions are important for me or not at this point.

Thanks, looking forward to getting this to work!

I have no experience with a MAC, but on Windows I was confused at first. Did you make sure to start it up on your "server" computer, disable classic mode, enable remote daemon, and then edit the auth file with a text editor?

Things might be easier if you hooked up a monitor and keyboard to the MAC mini until you have things working properly.

Well I can login to the mini via Remote Desktop no problem, so technically I have a keyboard & monitor already. I tried disabling "classic" mode but then all I got was a menu bar thing and all preferences were greyed out, couldn't do anything with it. Had to re-enable classic to be able to even change anything at all. I did add a user & password to the auth file, but it didn't accomplish anything as I don't seem to have any of the command line functions installed/operational (deluged, deluge-web, etc.). Not sure what else I'm supposed to do... starting Deluge up is easy - it's running and as far as I can tell so is the daemon. I'm beginning to think that Deluge doesn't even work unless run from the terminal. In which case why have a binary at all? I'm sure that can't be the case but that's how it feels at the moment. Any other suggestions?

The options were all greyed out because you were not connected to the daemon. Did a window pop up and ask what daemon to connect to? That connection window is where you would enter the username and password from the auth file. There should have been a random named one with localhost on it. You can click that one, start daemon and then connect.

Nope, no popup or login or anything like that.

Actually... maybe there is. I didn't know what this was but now that you mention a popup, maybe this is what I'm seeing?

As you can see, there's nothing there... I have no idea what it's supposed to be, is this the daemon popup you're referring to?

So is this saying that it's a bug that has been fixed? I have the latest version as of my discovery of Deluge a couple days ago... do I need a different, more current, version?

It will be in the next 1.3 release but you can edit the file yourself as per last post in link.

Ah I see. I thought it was saying that the release I had already had the fix. I'll try the manual patch and see what happens. Thanks!
