Deluge Freezes Constantly

Have deluged running on Ubuntu 16.04 VM, using thin client generally on windows or mac.
Lately fast speeds/big torrents (i think) cause it to freeze. I assume its some kind of cache issue, but I can't figure it out.
it will hit anywhere from 3-5MB/s and just freeze, either indefinitely for a while. i can upload whatever log is needed.
HDD is a 4TB WD Purple, and has seen speeds of 30MB/s+ on this same deluge and system.
VM has 4CPUs 16GB RAM and 150GB for OS drive.
Checking systemd status, and its got a lot of on_alert_fastresume_rejected as the last thing before it froze
